Volunteer opportunity description

We seek motivated volunteers who are interested in helping the local adult community learners with their English speaking skills.

There are two options for ESOL volunteer roles: -

Option One: Supporting trained tutors in adult English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, under the direction of the trained tutors. 

Option Two: Planning and leading informal ESOL conversation in English that group members can join in with. Volunteers will not need to correct mistakes or explain grammatical rules but should be able and willing to speak in clear and correct English on a variety of subjects.

Volunteers can opt for one or both of the options.

What will I be doing if I am volunteering in ESOL classes?

• Responding to the directions of the tutors

• Assisting and supporting individual and/or small groups of learners to undertake the work set by the tutor to improve their English

• Encouraging learners to attend informal groups between classes so they can practice their conversational English skills What will I be doing if I am leading informal conversation groups?

• Meet and greet learners

• Organise the seating and tables

• Plan and deliver a conversation session each week for a mixed ability group of up to 12 learners of English

• Support each member of the group and encourage them to contribute to any discussions

• Promote understanding between different individuals and dealing diplomatically with any differences of opinion which may arise in discussions

• Keeping records of attendees.

Requirements

• Excellent spoken English

• Good communication skills

• Ability to lead a group discussion

• Enthusiasm for helping people learn

• Empathy for how people learn and for how everyone is different

• Diplomacy skills

• Ability to keep records

Initial classroom based training followed by support whilst in the first few weeks in the classroom or when leading activities.

Additional Information

2 References will be required

Volunteers will be required to have a Data and Barring Service (DBS) check

Volunteers will be required to comply with relevant Health and Safety as well as Safeguarding policies and procedures.
