Volunteer opportunity description

A Carer is a person who provides unpaid support to a family member, partner or friend who would otherwise be unable to manage without this support due to illness, frailty, physical or learning disability, mental ill-health or substance misuse.

Minimum of 4 hours once a week within the same time slot (office hours)

Main responsibilities

Volunteer Counsellors will be responsible for:


Providing 1-1 counselling sessions to a small caseload of unpaid carers receiving support from Swindon Carers Centre

Managing the scheduling of appointments, including collating any financial contributions, assess counselling provision, record keeping, encourage and monitor attendance.

Operating within best practice guidelines of the BACP ethical framework including the organisation and regular attendance of supervision sessions in line with the BACP minimum requirements

To prioritise vigilance and action regarding potential safeguarding, and work closely with the service delivery team to ensure the organisations safeguarding policies are adhered to 


Skills and Knowledge

A degree level qualification in counselling

A registered member of BACP

Outgoing, friendly and proactive character

Strong professional and ethical boundaries

Empathy with the needs of vulnerable adults and / or carers

Rapport and confidence when meeting new service users

Enjoy dealing with people from all backgrounds and of all ages with patience and flexibility

Good verbal and written communication skills

Swindon Carers Centre will offer all volunteers

Evidenced towards 120 placement hours required for newly qualified counsellors

The opportunity build gain experience and confidence of working with vulnerable adults and unpaid carers in a group work setting

Out of pocket expenses including travel, parking and relevant supervision costs  

Working with a friendly team of staff and volunteers

Additional training in relevant to working with vulnerable adults and unpaid carers including safeguarding

Due to the nature of this role applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Application or supply the organisation with relevant information for the DBS Update Service. 

A minimum of two references will be required at the time of application.

Evidence of a degree level qualification will be required

Potential volunteers in this role must obtain their own insurance and ensure they have professional supervision in place prior to starting the role
