Volunteer opportunity description

This role would be working with children and young people aged 5 – 18 years.  

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who carries extra responsibilities because someone in the household is ill, frail or disabled. Young carers might be providing care to another family person directly, and / or they might be taking on responsibilities (e.g. for younger siblings) on behalf of an incapacitated parent.

Main responsibilities

Volunteer Mini bus drivers will be responsible for:


To ensure the safe travel of young carers during activities during our school holiday activities

Ensure the minibus is collected and returned in good working order

Skills and Knowledge

Empathy with the needs of vulnerable children and young people

 Rapport and confidence when meeting new service users

 Assertive in appropriately challenging potential unsafe behaviour within the context of the group / activity

A willingness to be open new experiences such as trying a new activity Good verbal communication skills

Category D1 on your driving licence

Or have completed or willing to complete the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training

Swindon Carers Centre is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Due to the nature of this role applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Application or supply the organisation with relevant information for the DBS Update Service. 

A minimum of two references will be required at the time of application.

You must be aged 25-70 and have had a full driving licence for at least two years.

To drive a minibus, you need to have category D1 on your driving licence and / or completed the Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme (MiDAS) training
