Volunteer opportunity description

This role would be working with older adults some of whom are living with dementia  

A Carer is a person who provides unpaid support to a family member, partner or friend who would otherwise be unable to manage without this support due to illness, frailty, physical or learning disability, mental ill-health or substance misuse.

Volunteers in this role will be asked to volunteer 3 hours once a month on a Thursday 1:30pm – 4:30pm

Main responsibilities

Supporting carers and or a person with dementia to take part in an activity

Helping with the setting up and tidying up the venue

Reporting concerns to staff

Supporting a person living with dementia throughout the session (there is no expectation to provide personal care)

Being an extra pair of hands, supporting both the carer and person living with dementia with as little or as much assistance as they require with tasks such support with refreshment or during activities

Skills and Knowledge

Empathetic of vulnerable adults with additional and complex needs

A good sense of humour and conversationalist

Confident in meeting new people and building good rapport skills with additional and complex needs

An understanding of the complex issues of those living with dementia and the specialist support they may require.

Swindon Carers Centre will offer all volunteers

The opportunity gain experience and confidence of working with children and young people aged 5 – 18 years

Working with a friendly team of staff and volunteers

Additional training in relevant to working with vulnerable people including safeguarding

Due to the nature of this role applicants will be required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Application or supply the organisation with relevant information for the DBS Update Service. 

A minimum of two references will be required at the time of application.
