Homeless charity will feel the warmth of Big Swindon Knit volunteers
A group of volunteer knitters gathered in the Mayor’s Parlour on 31st January to make blankets for the homeless in Swindon. The Big Swindon Knit, which is run by Swindon Borough Council’s Community Health and Wellbeing Team, sees volunteers knit an array of items throughout the year and 16 members of the group were invited to a tea party on the 31st January. At the event, they sewed knitted squares together to make blankets which will be donated to Swindon-based homeless charity Threshold. The event is an opportunity for the volunteers to socialise and meet new people, including staff from Threshold, in a friendly and enjoyable environment. The Deputy Mayor of Swindon, Cllr Junab Ali, joined the celebrations and handed out awards to several individuals taking part. Over the past couple of years, the Big Swindon Knit has seen almost 150 hand-made blankets donated to the homeless charity as well as many other items such as hats, gloves and scarves. Paula Nunnery, a Community Researcher for Swindon Borough Council, said: the afternoon tea party as it’s a great way for our volunteers to get together and enjoy an afternoon together.”
